CONSUMER'S VOICE-18th May 2012 | The Voice
May 19th, 2012Dear Consumer’s Voice #1
I need your advice on the following issue. I think a garage wants to take me for a ride.
I bought a car from a garage in 2008. I have been using this car regularly and now I am at 51,000km. It has now developed gear problems and I cannot engage in reverse gear. I took the car to the garage in May for repairs. I was told the car is under warranty but when I collected the car I was told that they had made some adjustment to the gear linkage bush but still it was not good enough. They claimed that they had tried to communicate with me earlier trying to find out if they should order the linkage, although when I phoned then they did not tell me that.
When I asked about the warranty issue I was told that my car is beyond that cover because it was now more than three years old. I am told the warranty says either 100,000 km or three years, whatever comes first.
If I am going to start repairing it at 51,000km one wonders what other repair will be next. Is this not poor workmanship on the part of the supplier? I have tried to reason with them but without success. What an inconvenience?
It appears the crime I am being alleged to have committed is my failure to blow up the mileage of 100,000km within the three years. What should I do??
Clearly the garage made a mistake when they initially told you that it was still under warranty after four years but you should really have known the length of the warranty you got with this vehicle. As you mention it was for three years or 100,000km, whichever came first. In your case the three years obviously came first.
I’m not a mechanic so I can’t comment on how long your gearbox should have lasted but it’s clear that it won’t be covered by the warranty. Sorry to have bad news.
Update: The reader contacted us again to ask whether the gearbox would be covered by his insurance policy. Sorry, I’m afraid not. Vehicle insurance usually just covers accidents and theft.
Dear Consumer’s Voice #2
I need your advice.
I borrowed a friend of mine my VW car in January and he was involved in an accident, the car is not insured it was badly damaged in the front. He had it repaired by a backyard panel-beaters who joined the back of my car to the front of an old VW.
I told him I can’t take the car back, as the car was a cut and join. I told him if this car was insured the insurance company was going to write it off. He is insisting that I must take the car but I don’t want it back like this. Please advise.
OK, I think we both know that it was a mistake not to have insurance, don’t we?
Unfortunately given these circumstances I suspect your only option is legal action against your friend to recover the value of your vehicle. Clearly the vehicle is now worthless, given that it’s now two busted cars welded together.
Update: the reader got back to us and mentioned that he had already instructed an attorney but that he was “waiting for judgment”. I’m not sure what that means but at least action has been taken.
Dear Consumer’s Voice #3
Of late there has been news going around about investing in one of the biggest trades abroad known as Eurex.
I’m hesitant to invest with this company because am not sure if its real or a scam. Could you please help me by tracing them and give a true picture about their operation and the like.
I really would NOT advise anyone to “invest” in this scheme or any other “High Yield Investment Program”. We’ve researched and commented on this particular company and others of their type in the past. They make unbelievable claims about the money you can make from these schemes but always publish disclaimers tucked away on their web site saying it’s not really going to happen. You can see more on our blog at consumerwatchdogbw.blogspot.com.

Ponzi |
May 19th, 2012Ponzi schemes are a type of pyramid scheme which operate on a “steal from Peter to pay Paul” foundation.
With the promise of big returns on an investment as a lure, the scammer takes money from new investors and uses it to pay off previous investors until no more new recruits can be found and the whole dodgy scheme falls apart, with the newest investors being left with nothing.
The scam is named after Charles Ponzi, a 1920’s con man who sold investors in New England a 40% return on their investment, promising to deliver in 90 days, compared with an average rate of around 5% in a savings account. Ponzi plotted to make money by taking advantage of the difference in exchange rates between the dollar and other currencies to buy and sell international mail coupons at a profit. His scheme was a great success initially, and during one afternoon in 1921, he made $1,000,000. But when the scheme began to fail, it became evident that he had only ever actually bought around $30 worth of the mail coupons on which the scheme was based.
Beware of any new scheme that promises that the investment will achieve an above average rate of return. The rate of return is usually stated in the sales pitch. The promised rate of return has to be high enough to be of interest to the investor but not so extraordinary as to be totally unbelievable.
A quite believable explanation of how the investment can achieve the above usual rate of return is always given. An explanation that is occasionally used is that the investor is highly skilled with years of experience and/or has some kind of insider information.
For it to work, the first few investors will make at least the promised rate of return, if not more
Other investors will then hear about the payoffs.( Paying a few forum posters to give rave reviews is enough incentive for sales to sky rocket) Just because a product has over 100 favourable reviews in a Forum is no excuse not to do more thorough homework, especially if handing out cash to a stranger!
Ponzi Schemes are quite basic but can be amazingly influential, especially in these difficult times when people are getting desperate just to keep a roof over their heads.
There are 3 steps to a good Ponzi scam:
1. Convince enough initial investors to put some cash into the investment.
2. After the agreed timeframe return the invested money back to the first investors plus the promised interest amount.
3. Now it becomes so much easier to convince more investors to place their money into the system. Usually the majority of the first investors will also return. Why wouldn’t they? After all, the system has already proved itself!
Rinse and repeat the above a few times. During step 2 at some point, the pattern is broken. Instead of paying off the investors, the scammer makes a quick exit with the raised cash!
With little or no real earnings, the scheme will need a consistent flow of investment in order to continue. Ponzi schemes tend to fail when it becomes harder to recruit new investors or when a large number of investors ask to cash out at the same time.
Bernard L. Madoff is currently serving a 150-year sentence in federal prison for initiating such a scheme.
A high-yield investment program, also known as HYIP, is a type of Ponzi scheme, an example of which is:
www.1-million-usd.com they promise to invest your money in Forex, and then pay you a guaranteed percentage.
A simple Google search of the owner Henry Liu +Scam will reveal he is the master of defrauding people with Forex signals and managed accounts.
It is possible to make fortunes with Forex, but learn to do it yourself or thoroughly research the person you hire on your behalf. A word of warning on this one – it’s also all too easy to lose a fortune with Forex too.
If it seems too good to be true – walk away, far away!

Currency Trading: Forex Trading Myths (And Honest Answers)
May 10th, 2012Forex trading online has become more and more popular in recent years, due in large part to the popularity of stock trading on the internet. But along with this popularity comes the inevitable hype, myths, and at times, complete untruths. While many of these myths are relatively harmless – they do cast doubts on the Forex industry, and some can actually be costly to beginning currency traders as well. Here is the list of the most common Forex myths:
· Forex trading is easy. First the truth. It is easy to start Forex trading and it is easy to buy and sell currencies online. But succeeding and making money is anything but easy. It takes education, time and practice. Of course, there are talented traders that learn very fast, but generally speaking, starting traders should dedicate part of their time to educating themselves, practicing and developing strategies.
· Forex is gambling. This is a myth and is often heard about all forms of trading; whether it’s stocks, bonds, futures, options etc. In reality Forex is the epitome of macro economics in the purest form, even more so than other types of market trading as it deals solely with the performance, structure, and behavior of national or regional economies as a whole, and their interrelationships with each other. If this were true, then all the national economic administrators, advisors, consultants and students are the world’s best gamblers. Rather we are all students of economics, technical analysis, fundamental analysis and psychology.
· Forex is a scam. Forex got some bad press after High Yielding Investment Programs (HYIP’s) started to claim that they earn money on Forex. More recently a firm in New York was shut down and another’s internet trading site dismantled for bilking investors out of millions. Fortunately prison terms have been issued for bringing discredit to a legitimate, regulated and law abiding industry. Actually Forex is a real currency market where anyone can trade for themselves and be responsible for their own decisions, so it’s hardly a scam. The only scams you should be afraid of as a Forex trader are scamming brokers and marketers that sell Forex books, sure-fire strategies, trading systems, guaranteed returns or the usual “to good to be true” devices.
· Only the rich can trade Forex. This was true. Now with the fast development of high bandwidth in the common Internet connection, coupled with the financial backing of the largest financial institutions in the world, Forex is now open to everyone. You can start trading with just $1.
· Forex is completely random. Although the short time fluctuations of the Forex market may seem spontaneous and random, this is a complete myth. When you order a trade, there has to be a counter trade to yours. There is nothing random about it. Long term movements of currency pairs are far from random. There is a certain range of probability, but it is not random and can be predicted, controlled and influenced by global, regional and national economics.
· There is a “Holy Grail” in Forex. Some prefer to believe that they can find some strategy that will earn millions and work forever. Unfortunately that belief has no proof. Successful traders are always changing their strategies and adapting them to the current market conditions. Usually even a Forex strategy is something that can’t be expressed as a simple set of rules, it must used with flexibility and adjusting to be really profitable. Yes, a Philippine housewife opened a $25 Forex trading account and built it to $2.6 million in three years. She is a phenomenal trader. She studied, practiced, learned and constantly adjusted and executed her trading strategy flawlessly.
· Brokers trade against their clients. In a short, this is both true and false. When you execute a trade there has to be someone executing the exact counter trade at the same time. If there isn’t your broker counters it to cover your trade until they can match the trade in the opposite direction with another trader to minimize their exposure. Remember, Forex brokers make their money from the difference in the currency pair (the spread), and try to keep their exposure to the market minimal for the most part.
· Forex trading is risky. THIS IS NOT A MYTH – THIS IS TRUE. Just as in any form of trading or investing, there are no guarantees and you could lose all the money you invested. While practicing sound risk management techniques prevent this, it could happen. If you open an account with $25, please make sure it is not $25 you need to feed the baby. Also, while I have never heard of anyone losing more than they invested (modern internet trading systems prevent it), technically you could.
